In today's world, it can be very challenging to take care of a pet. Between work, socialization, school, vacations, children, and anything else you might have going on in your life, finding one of the easy pets to take care of seems more of a necessity than a luxury.
Many people want pets but don't have a lot of time or energy to look after them. They need a pet that will mostly be content without a tremendous amount of attention.
Fortunately, there are a few pets that require little maintenance while still being enjoyable and fun! Here are the top five that you should consider!
One of the Easy Pets To Take Care Of: Turtles
Turtles are fun pets for a variety of reasons. They are entertaining to watch, are more interactive than fish, and are relatively easy to take care of. Indeed, turtles are becoming more and more popular as pets for these very reasons.
Turtles will require an aquarium, regular water changes, cleaning, and food (although they do not need to receive food every day). They're relatively low maintenance pets. However, they are not good pets for kids because they can carry salmonella, and children are very likely to pick them up without washing their hands after.
Depending on the turtle variety you pick, it could live 25 years or more. Some of them can even live 50 years or more if the circumstances are right.
Tortoises
Many people mistake turtles for tortoises, but they are quite different creatures. Turtles live in water, while tortoises spend most of their time on land. That's why tortoises need more room to roam with smaller patches of water than turtles.
Tortoises also tend to live longer. Indeed, a tortoise holds the record for the longest-living land animal who is 187 years old! The tortoise you have as a pet may not live that long, but most breeds can live 50-100 years or more. Therefore, a tortoise is a long-term commitment!
Betta Fish
If you want one of the easy pets to take care of, a betta fish should top your list. These fish require minimal space and tend to live 2-3 years, so make sure that you make the most out of it. Give them everything they need and make sure they live a happy life.
Betta fish can get oxygen through their gills or by breathing air (you'll see them coming to the surface to breathe air through their mouth). That's why they can live in smaller spaces. These fish require food and an occasional water change (like any other fish), but unlike goldfish, for example, they don't need massive tanks. It's much easier to do a water change on a 3-gallon tank than it is to do one on a 20-gallon one!
If you do get a betta fish, please keep in mind that male bettas are remarkably territorial. Therefore, you'll need to keep them alone. Otherwise, they will fight and kill each other!
Sea Monkeys
Sea monkeys are the quintessential "set-it-and-forget-it" pet. Sea monkeys are not monkeys, and they don't live in the sea. Technically speaking, they are brine shrimp that enter a state of suspended animation when there's no water.
However, all you need to do is pour the packet of sea monkeys and dust into an aquarium, and they spring back to life! They require minimal feeding (once per week) and will chase any light source. If it's an easy pet to take care of you want, sea monkeys are the way to go!
Hamster
Hamsters are one of the best small animals for pets. Hamsters are a decent amount of work, but they are relatively easy to take care of overall. The main thing about hamsters is that you must get their living conditions set up correctly. The cage must be big enough and not have too much spacing in between the wires. If it does have too much spacing, the hamster may get stuck between them. That can result in severe injury or even death.
These small creatures will live about 3-5 years with a good home and require little maintenance. You'll need to ensure there's adequate food and water for your hamster. You'll need to regularly clean the cage, too, to prevent waste from causing problems for your pet.
Please also keep in mind that hamsters are nocturnal. They tend to want to sleep during the day and be awake at night. Therefore, if you find your hamster sleeping in the daylight, that's normal behavior and does not indicate anything is wrong with your pet!
There Are Many Easy Pets to Take Care Of!
Fortunately, there are many easy pets to take care of if you want a pet that doesn't require a substantial amount of work. Turtles, tortoises, betta fish, sea monkeys, and hamsters are all potential pets if you want to minimize the amount of work you need to do regularly. No pet will be "work free," but these pets will require less work than many others!
